600 and Counting

Filed under: Reflections — ktismatics @ 12:48 pm

I thought about baking a virtual cake, but it might not meet everyone’s tastes or dietary restrictions. Instead, tonight I shall raise a glass of my favorite libation in honor of the Ivan, Are You Okay? post and its 600th comment. As best I can tell Ivan holds fast to atheism while Sam remains Christian. Others are always welcome to join the discussion, which has been going on since last December.

  1. Thank you John.

I find Sam one of the most fascinating people to discuss Christianity and God with. Anyone is welcome to chime in if they ever desire to.

I spend a lot of thinking time on the differences of Sam and I and why we think so differently. Shermer had a book out called why people believe weird things, and I count my own set of beliefs as weird as anyone else’s.

To my thinking, Its as if Sam came up with the conclusion of God and the resulting life of Jesus then fills in the informational gaps in this mental framework. I keep thinking I approached it more neutrally (But I bet I am fooling myself big time here)
with reading both Christian literature (some of which Sam recommended) and other stuff on why people are atheists. My framework feels like its built around the question not the answer. Don’t know if this makes any sense at all.

But thank you John for hosting us and thank you Sam for such thoughtful replies, thank you Vince and others who joined in.

And the big question: What libation did you drink John?

  2. Ivan asks all the big questions for which, if i am honest, I really don’t have any answers, but it’s thought provoking stuff, and well worth the discussion.

It really would be great if some other ktismaticians would chime in as it must be getting a bit wearying for both John and Ivan to have to keep treadind the same old ground of my own confusions!

I guess some may think they have to first update themselves before jumping in – believe me, that’s doing it the hard way – just take up wherever we are now, and dive in, and you can catch up on the now voluminous past later!

  3. What libation do I drink? Whatever’s in the fridge.

I don’t participate in the conversation very often, but I’m always interested by it.

  4. Sam,

The secret is not to rush it. Go for the long haul not the sprint.

What I would like to know is the stuff from Vince.. I have had this before, a few exchanges, then fiery death in hell warning.. then nothing.

I often wonder is this becase the questions don’t have quick casual answers? Does it worry his own personal faith? The responses seem sometimes highly charged as if its really found some emotional point.

Did you see this at all John or Sam?

    Did I misread it?

  5. Ivan, a lot of folks do feel threatened by questions and doubts. On the other hand, without a bit of testing, where will the confidence come from? A good debate, iron sharpening iron, there;s nothing quite like it. But, though I have been proved wrong many a time, I find that God is in fact bigger than that. The ‘wrong’ is purely my fault and God should not be blamed for my deficiencies!
